Colorado Historical Society - Narrow Gauge Conversion

CHS-1-Speeder

Rocky Mountain Railway converts existing rail cars to other rail gauges. Starting in the fall of 2004, RMR proceeded to undertake the conversion of a Fairmont A4 from 56 1/2 inch standard gauge to 36 inch narrow gauge. This project was undertaken to provide the Colorado Historical Society with Maintenance of Way power for the Georgetown Loop Railroad. This area chronicles the ensuing events.

RMR acquired a Canadian National Fairmont A4, manufactured in Fairmont, MN., from a supplier in Edmonton, AB and transported it to the RMR work facility at Valmont, CO, a small area just east of Boulder, CO.

The general process is as follows:

  • Power wash the dust and dirt off

  • Assess and record the status of the car

  • Will it start and move - Yes

  • Remove all extraneous accessories

  • Separate the cab and chassis

  • Move the chassis to the mechanical work area, narrow the cross rails and axles, and refurbish

  • Move the cab to the clean and paint area and refurbish it

  • Re-assemble the cab and chassis

  • Thoroughly test the car

Chassis separated from the cab and moved to Fredrick, CO to be narrowed and refurbished.

Cab separated from the chassis and sitting on a push cart. The cab will be refurbished separately from the running gear.
